Does anyone know how to burn DVDs with the VCD format?  I don’t plan on watching it on anything other than the LCDs in my jeep so VCD quality is sufficient. Pretty much I want to convert mpeg/avi to vcd format on dv-r/rw discs. Thanks.

Technically you can’t. White Book is a CD specification, not a DVD specification. Sounds like splitting hairs, but even though the media looks the same, it’s actually a quite different format.

u guys are great, as i was just about to post a long list of questions about making DVDs and VCDs using the TR3, but first, Linc, just use plain CDs to burn VCDs, it’s cheap!

Now on to me, I just finished installing the following and have questions:

DVD Rippers: 1st DVD Ripper, Advanced DVD Ripper. CopyToDVD, 321 DVD X Copy Xpress

DVD Assemblers: Roxio DVD Builder, InterVideo WinDVD Creator, ACE Video Workshop, 321 DVD X Maker.

...and I don’t have a DVD burner yet :shock: (did u all see the multilayer Sony announcement yesterday for 180$!!!?)

Okay, here are my questions:
1. in the above list which is best.  it’s gunna take weeks to evaluate all that stuff.
2.u can’t burn a DVD with a CDwriter can u, with any of this stuff?  One of those programs implied that…
3. I can copy a DVD to VCD format with something in that list, yes?  Which is all I really want to do at this point.
4. In making my own VCD (and DVD once I get a burner) out of spare bits of AVIs, pictures, buttons, etc.,  will any of the above know what to do as far as splitting the movie over 2 disks - in the case of VCD/SVCD, and in the case of DVD, will it work on ALL dvd players?!? ie. the menus, subtitles, etc…

I am not sure I even want to get into this after doing two days of installing and research, but like u i am a gadget freak that also happens to be a filmaker too…and now i THINK i can do my own production, not like that is a good thing…

You can burn VCD-compliant MPEG1 files onto a DVD so that you don’t have to carry around as many CDs. You just won’t be able to run it like a real VCD.

groove thang! well that’s verbose. do u mean that i can burn a DVD 4+ gigs on my cd writer that came in the TR, the Matisssue thingee? but it would be in VCD format?  and not DVD?  huh.

Yes, you can burn a 4GB VCD onto a DVD and *Most* Set-top DVD players will be able to play it as a VCD.

No, I mean that just because it’s a DVD-R/RW it doesn’t mean that you have to store DVD (aka MPEG2) quality video on it. A DVD-R is just like a CD-R except it holds 4.7GB of data…any data.

With MPEG2 compression, the most you can get is 1-2 hours of video. However, if you’re not going to stick this disc in a consumer DVD deck and just want to use it to store some video files then you can use MPEG1 (which is used for VCD quality movies), Quicktime, AVI, WMV, DivX, or RealVideo filetypes. You’ll be able to get almost as good as DVD quality video but many many more hours.
