I live in Los Angeles and was going to buy my wife a TR3 as a gift…However, I don’t know if she’ll like it because of its size.  The last thing I want to do is be stuck with a $2,000 laptop.  Every place that stocks it wants to charge a 15% restocking fee if the box is opened.

No sh*t.

How is my wife supposed to know if she likes it unless she actually gets to (physically) touch and turn on the damned thing?

Don’t you have any kind of electronic superstores where you can test and see the TR before buying it ? Here in belgium, i went to several Sony Centers before deciding that i would be my beloved next notebook. I agree that it’s quite scary to buy it without testing it first ... If there are several shops in Brussels (center of Belgium) which allow users to test the TR, i guess you must have something similar in America !

As a LA area person I suggest the following…

If it’s not going to be a surprise gift then you can head over to your local Fry’s or Best Buy (or even Circuit City) and go play with it hands on. Take your wife of course and call ahead of time to make sure they have it on display. I know the Woodland Hills, Manhattan Beach, and Fountain Valley Fry’s all have it. The West LA Best Buys seem to have it but call to make sure.

I made several trips to Fry’s before I bought mine and it was good enough to figure out whether I wanted to buy it or not. Of course, I’ve owned 3 previous subnotebooks beforehand so i knew that the size wasn’t going to be an issue for me. Sometimes, the only way to find out is to try. I would double check on the Fry’s return policy. I do believe that you can return a laptop within 15 days as long as you have everything back in the box.

Circuit City no longer charges a fee. You get 14 days.

Since its a gift (and you dont want her to know beforehand, I assume) why don’t you cut out (or print out) a picture of the notebook and put it in her card…then when she opens it, tell her its hers if she likes it (after going to the store).
