What ho all - it would appear that Tosh are bringing out 60 gb drives for apple for the iPods. From memory the TR drives are 1.8” sized which should mean that a potential upgrade is in the wings….....

What’s more interesting, in the article, it says that the 1.8” drives already exist in ranges from 5GB - 40GB, which makes me wonder, why did Apple choose to create a 4GB Mini, when they could have easily created 20GB+ models?
I know the ‘small’ hard drive size is what turned me off.

Nox:  The regular ipods use the 1.8” drives.  The minis actually use a smaller microdrive that are the same size as CF cards.  I think you have them confused.

The 1.8” drives just fit into a regular sized iPod so it’s common sense why they didn’t put them into the iPod mini. There’s no possible way they could have fit one in there.

I’m sure Toshiba will try to pimp their 0.85” drives to Apple in the future for next gen iPod minis. Unfortunately, they only have 2/4GB models and they’re not shipping in volume like the Hitachi Microdrives (which use more common industry standard connectors = lower cost). At any rate, 4GB is more than enough music for a device of that size. I see tons of chicks using them at the gym and they’re never there for more than 2 hours.

Fantastic, a storage and speed boost will be nice when these drives are released. I only wish the 20GB single platter version was available with a PCMCIA connector, that would be great. For now, I make do with a sloooooow 2GB version PCMCIA 1.8” HDD and a 1GB MS Pro.
