From May 30th to June 5th, BestBuy has the terrific deals on Netgear’s WGR614 and WGT624 wireless routers with 4-port switches.

WGR614 is a 54Mbps model and is priced at $49.99 after rebates.
WGT624 is a 108Mbps model and is priced at $69.99 after rebates.

The latter model lists at $129 so this is a terrific price. I also have the latter and it is a great performer, easy to use and setup, and has the best antenna strength of any model I’ve tested (great range).

The TR doesn’t support 108Mbps (at least, not officially - it depends on your market) so you can make do with the $49.99 model. However, if you plan on upgrading later then the $69.99 is worth getting. You might as well spend the extra $20….the WGR614 is regularly $89.99.

So, if you’re in the need of a wireless router then these are worth looking into.

Do you know if they Netgear’s corresponding AP is any good, as I already have a router?

I think you can run these as purely APs…but let me check when i get home to verify it. I’ll let you know later today.

regarding the WGT624 as a 108mbps model and that the TR only supports up to 54mbps ... theres additional hardware possible to buy:

netgear also released a pcmcia wireless card, i think its called WGT511 but im not sure

You can use many Access Points/Routers simply as Access Points…here’s the basic gist of it.

- Don’t use the WAN/Internet port on the WGT624
- Use a lan port to connect to your router
- Disable DHCP on the WGT624
- Assign the WGT624 a unused IP outside the DHCP pool of the your router

Well, I started off with 1GB of memory.

Here’s the thing 1GB memory is not inherently faster than 512MB. It totally depends on what you’re doing. We’ve discussed this time and time again. If your application’s memory need exceeds what you have in your system then you will get slowdowns. Having 1GB of memory typically assures that most people will not run out of memory when running muliple apps ensuring smooth performance.
