just wondering, thinking of getting sony type S but would like to upgrade the internal HD to something more powerful (7200 rpm) and spacious ( > 60 gb, if there is any with 7200 rpm HD).  if hd is swap, will it affect the battery life? how about heat? i know performance probably will up par to pentium 4 desktop machine, but if the heat underneath the laptop will be like oven, i’ll rather have the original HD.

Most notebooks don’t use a 7,200 rpm drive because it takes more power to run (lower battery life), spins faster (on a portable machine you get harm the drive while its spinning if you drop it), and because it also spins faster, it gets hotter, much hotter.

so u r saying that 7200 rpm is not worth it cause of the trade off?  i guess 5200 rpm is a good in term of the tradeoff…

Depends on what your using it for. The TR can’t be upgraded right now because a small enough drive isn’t available.

There are plenty of 2.5” external cases to run notebook drives (your topic question).

7,200 to 5,400 (not 5,200) is a bug difference, but it depends on why you want to do it.

For me, a notebook’s #1 feature is battey life…whats the point of it being portable if it can’t last more then 2 hours? With the increase in HD speed you are drastically lowering your battery life. With most things, its a give and take situation.

If you are still looking at an external case, its not made by sony, but it has Vaio on it…

There are plenty like it on ebay.
