What exactly is the network bridge? 

What benefit is it to bridge the firewire and the LAN connectors?

Well a network bridge does exactly that, it bridges two connections.

The reason to bridge the firewire and lan connection would be if you had another computer which had firewire but no ethernet. You could plug the TR into ethernet and into the other computer

By bridging the connections the comp with firewire but no ethernet would then be able to connect to access the ethernet network as if it were attached to the network itself.
