I was just wondering (while waiting for my postman with my TR2 ) how people went about keeping the files on their desktops and TRs the same.  I know that windows comes with the briefcase but it looks like a bit of a sucky option to me

Windows XP can hold an offline version off all files in a network drive/folder. In the Windows Explorer open “Extras -> Folder options” (I have a German Windows so i am not sure about the captions).  The last page should be named like “Offline files”. Activate an configure it. Now you can select a network drive/folder. Open the context menu and choose “Make offline usable” (or something with a similiar meaning).

OK so I’ve enabled offline files and synchronised them to my TR2 but now I just have one folder with all my files in which is no good as I’m trying to sych my ‘my documents’ folder… Am I missing something basic here?

Mighty Mattj, now you got one folder that works offline ,right? if so it is good. You can use that folder as your “My documents” and then target windows’ folder setting to make that folder as “my documents” instead of an original one(c:\doc and setting\username\my document).

ps. to do so right click at your “my documents” folder. you will see “Target folder location box” and then find the path where is that folder.

You can’t really set a password in windows XP, instead you limit which users can access the file and what permisions (read, write etc) they have over that folder.  On the computer with the folder you want to share you have to disable ‘simple file sharing’ under tools, folder options, view.
Now when you go to share a folder, the sharing tab will have more options.  Click on permisions and you’ll see a list of people with access to that shared folder.  You can add and delete these to ristrict access to whoever.
The only strange thing is that to resrict it to a certain user, that user has to also have an account on the sharing computer. ie. my laptop user is called ‘laputa’ and so I had to create an identical account on my desktop with same user name and password.  Then I could select ‘laputa’ under the permisions section and remove all other entries.  While everyone else on my network can see that I’ve shared ‘my documents’ only my laptop can access it.
I hope that makes sense… took me a while to figure all this out for myself the first time!!

Well I never changed anything in security as I think it only applies to people logged into that computer.  ie. if you want to restrict a users access to that folder when they’re logged in
If you want to access that folder over a network from another computer then you control the access from the permission window.  But you still have to create a user on the sharing computer for the remote user to login as… Confusing I know :?

I changed the security setting once, and it messed up. Consequently, even administrator can’t access the folder :?  So i tried to restore that settting and now it works fine.

Yeah I’ve had things like that happen.  Sometimes I share something for a housemate and give it the ‘everyone’ setting and no-one can access it, so I normally just end up moving it into a folder which is already shared.  If you’ve got the time/inclination you’ve just got to play with it really!!

I had quite some problems with the permission/security settings for shared folders in the past myself. As far as I understand it now, your above assumption isn’t quite right. The security tab is as important as the permission tab. The permission tab is just controlling access to the shared folder, where security is controlling access to files and folders inside the shared one. So if you got ‘Full Control’ in the permission tab, but your user (or Everyone) isn’t listed in the security tab, you won’t be able to do anything inside the shared folder.
You can have one shared folder for all of your friends (Full Control for Everyone in permission tab), and inside they all have their own subfolders, which only they can access (Only add this user to the security tab and set appropriate permissions).

Hope I got it right and didn’t confuse any of you.

Yeah I can see where you’re coming from with the above, and it does make sense… I think :shock:  When I’ve finished failing all my exams I’ll have a play and see what’s what…. Bring on Friday the 4th :|
