Hi, I was downloading stuff yesterday night and the downloads were going on today morning too..I decided to use my TR for a while and then the clicking noises started and everytime it wrote some data to the hdd I could see the orange light glow and at the same time hear the clicking sound. I just switched it off hoping it would be ok but after the reboot when I started the downloads again, it was back with every disk write. After taking a bath I checked back and was surprised to hear no more of the irritating clicks. But after hearing those clicks I guess my hdd is about to crash…I cant even do ne thing about it since I am leaving for India on Tues so cant get in touch with those rogues Sony and send it in for repairs…I guess I’ll just have to wait till I return and then send it in (hopefully it will be alive till then). But I am so damn pissed that we pay so much money (good enough to get 5 cheap laptops) and still those bas***ds use sub-standard hardware..they care for nothing but maximizing their profits :x . I have owned that machine for 2 months but usage wise u could say I got it just a week ago.

It’s made by Toshiba and the exact model is MK4004GAH. Now I am even more worried since I remember Groovy saying that hdd problems is common with the TR having the hitachi drives, but I am experiencing it with a Toshiba.

I got a toshiba too (not sure if same model though, and I can’t check it right now) but it doesn’t click every sec. I noticed that once it starts to make that noice, there’s an interval of approx. 2~3 minutes.
Doesn’t it suck? :x :x :x

I just noticed that my CD-R was making a clicking noise, almost like the ticking of a clock. I took out the CD and it stopped. Is this similar to what others are hearing?

Mine hasn’t clicked in the year in which I’ve had it—but the HD is really, really slow. It often locks up for a couple seconds while the drive light is solid orange for a couple seconds. Installing large apps requires the patience of a Bhuddist monk, as not even the cursor will move for seconds on end…

hi,
hehe, sadly i’ve dealt with this for the last 8 months. My TR2a has been service 4 times and has had 2 hard drives replaced (two dead hitachi’s). I’ve even driven to the sony repair site and personally asked about the hard drive issue. Perhaps I should buy the extended warrenty. Anyhow, long story shortened, the sony representative told me that the Hard drive clicking noise is caused by the head parking. It’s supposed to do that, but they were having a difficult time mimicking the constant clicking sound. The rep also told me that they’ve switched to toshiba because the hitachi drives were constantly dieing. The closest thing i’ve been able to pinpoint the sound is when I listen to MP3’s. If you notice your hard drive starting to tick more and more while operating slower, i’d suggest you to backup your stuff. I’ve lost pictures that’ll never come back. :

i thought the clicking was similar to regular harddrives when they are doing a lot of reads and writes all over the place they are trying to move around fast .... usually signs of a very fragmented drive ...
try defragmenting it and see if it clicks as often anymore ..?
