For those of you who want finer control over your startup items you’ll want to take a look at this program.

You can enable/disable startup items and delete them to clean up your startup process and to see what’s loading up at boot time. The program shows you all of the locations where startup items reside. Also, even if you delete items they are saved in a deleted items area just in case you want to get something back. This is good for users who haven’t re-installed the OS from scratch and want to manage all of the applications Sony has preinstalled.

The program easily installs itself in your Control Panels so it’s easy to find.

just have to read the help file on the website to know that the program installs itself as a control panel applet and does not create a desktop icon…still, it’s free and cool. thx

XP and most other versions of Windows post-98 have this sort of program built in. Just click Start -> Run -> type “msconfig” and you have MS’s version of this program. Msconfig looks in more places than this one, like the services, and pre Win95 INI files.

but this comes with features that Bill gates and co. won’t give us, which in short is a registry editor that is easy to use. using the above tool you can move things around from one area of the registry and desktop settings to another, as well as delete things and still have a backup of what things you removed.  it’s slick and free, but i can’t say that i would trust it.  i had to repair ms office after moving the entry for ms toolbar, but maybe that’s just a ms problem.  who knows.  the whole startup procedure seems pretty murky and quirky in xp. i still get always hide networking icons popping up with unknown labels randomly. and to adjust the order in which things load is impossible as far as i can tell, and i’ve tried.
