Ok, I have had my TR1MP for a couple of months now and the DVD drive has stopped playing DVD’s. CD’s will play and write with no issue so it is obviously the drive that is at fault.
I called Sony who arranged to have it picked up and sent back for repair. I have just had a call from them and it is their opinion that it has been dropped / damaged so therefor they want almost 200 quid to fit a new drive.
This, I am arguing as I know that it has not been dropped or damaged while in my posession but it is going to be a case of my word against theirs - I am waiting for the engineers report and photos to be sent back to me so I can see just what it is that they are talking about.
It all seems a bit strange given that I have had a couple of phone calls from them last week as I forgot to take the BIOS password off and no mention was made of any damage then…...
Anyone else had hassle like this from Sony?
Anyone found a source for the TR3 drive in the UK?
Sorry for your issues. I’ve dealt with Sony support a number of times and never had any issues, but as you said they do try and pass the blame to the consumer as many times as possible.
Did you ask why dropping it would only make DVDs not work and not CDs? I assume they are saying the DVD laser is busted, correct?
I heard exactly the same problem with other Sony VAIO being under the UK support….. the only difference was they were claiming that the person who sent it for repairs apparently splilled some water on the keyboard and that was what caused the damage. They also were going to send pictures to prove it… How lame! That person as far as I remember could not prove anything and he never spilled anything as well.
Sorry dude.

SONY just charged me $200 to repair the bottom cover of my 3 month old TR2. It was never dropped and it was always handled with care. The case was plastic , not the magnesium they described. I can break the pieces of the case that broke off easily with my fingers. May the buyer beware. SONY claims it was dropped. The only thing that is dropped is SONY from my approved vendor list. Love the TR2, hate SONY.
So, what happened to the bottom of the case? Did it just simply crack by itself? I’m just curious. I take decent care of mine but it does get jostled a lot since I’m taking it everywhere nearly every day. There hasn’t been any problems so far so I’m curious how yours needed to be fixed so soon.
Yeah, i’m curious too…I bring my TR everywhere and there are no cracks that I can see. I pick it up with one hand (putting all the pressure on one point) and still nothing.
I took it out of the padded bag and placed it on the conference room table and noticed that the corner to the right of the DVD/CD drawer was missing. The parts were in the bag. So I have no idea how it happened. It was in my control all the time.
I bought a TR extended battery which was defective from day 1. It was quite a challenge convincing the support woman located in India that it really was defective and I that just wanted a RMA #. She was very polite, but I was surprised that I was required to prove that it was really defective just to return it when it was only 7 or 10 days into my ownership—still well within the 30 days. It should’ve been a no questions asked return like when you go to a place like Target.
My only dealing with Sony and my TR is when I first got the machine. I couldn’t burn the recovery CDs. I called up and they overnighted 2 sets of the DVDs for free…I can’t complain.

same happened with me too…infact the 1st time they sent me the recovery dvd’s for TR2AP so I called them up a second time and the right set of recovery dvd’s were with me the next business day…both times it was an excellent experience.
There are very few companies I can call as an end user (as opposed to someone with an actual account rep) and expect to get some satisfaction. The good companies are getting fewer and fewer these days too. The ones that have really earned my ire though are Iomega, Sony, Gateway and most recently Netgear (first time in my life I completely cursed out a tech!).
I called Sony after reformatting my TR and after figuring out where most of the drivers were, I called them with problems I was having with the motion eye freezing. Once he found out that I clean formatted my system, he absolutely refused to help me. Looking back at it, I should have just stretched out the call just to fuck with his call time.
I called once with wireless connection problems. It doesn’t take much for a rep to impress me because I don’t know half as much as some of you geeks do. 8)
Anyways, the guy walked me through deleting my network bridge and that resolved a conflict I was having with my wired / wireless capabilities. It wasn’t bad at all.
All it took was one rather sternly worded email to sony and lo and behold I have just had a voicemail from sony stating that it was under warranty after all and it was sat in dispatch waiting to come back to me.
Ok - so my girlfriend is a lawyer with a top london firm which helped with the writing of the email but it just goes to show that if you push then they will back down.
You would think that I would be happy with this but it means that i can’t justify getting the DVD burner upgrade now
Can’t wait to get it back - it’s amazing how attached you get to these things although I had forgotton how good my IBM T23 was…...
So after much grief it has been returned; aside from DHL (courier) not putting an apartment number on the delivery it would have been with me last week.
All works with no issues so me very happy - all I have to do now is source a spare PSU for the office, maybe an Apple keyboard and something better than the slip case (which got absolutly filthy while in Africa)
Oh, and install all my development crap on it…...bang goes this evening!
