Anyone have the wireless drivers that are compatable with the TRx/B models? These models have a,b and g wireless bands, and I guess they have unique drivers too as no other drivers for other models will install.

oh yes, I’ve checked all the sony websites around the world. Very few drivers are available for download. I’ve also emailed each regional sony division with no luck. The Japanese site has no downloads, and the japanese ftp has all the folders and files named as numbers, which means you cant select what you need without finding it on the website first. As they wont accept emails in english, and as i dont speak all that much japanese… that option is out the window. The laptop i have [tr3b] is a japanese import, and they dont come with a driver disk.
As the trA machines dont have 3 band wireless, those drivers dont work.
My ONLY option left is if someone with a tr1B, tr2B or tr3B gives me a copy of their drivers by extracting them from their driver disk.
Someone PLEASE help, i’m 10mins away from the only wireless beach in the world, and my damn wireless aint workin!!!
It’s the Fujitsu generic driver for Atheros based chipsets (A/B/G) supporting the latest speeds up to 108Mbps and SuperG technologies. It should work in your TR as it’s mostly likely Atheros based.
When you download it and extract it, it will create a couple of directories. The actual driver is in the WinXP directory. The ACU (Atheros Client Utility) is located in the Ateros 1.41 (yea, it’s misspelled) directory. Don’t run the SetupDRV.exe in the main directory as it will try to install the Fujitsu specific stuff as well…and it will be in Japanese.
I just tried it on my Netegriti 802.11a/b/g card (which is Atheros based) and it works like a charm. The updated interface is neat with even more info and control over the card than before.
I’ve been trying to find a decent copy of the Atheros drivers and client utility because the ones for the Netegriti got on my nerves the way it popped up at random.. I tried several that i managed to locate on dslreports or something, but they seemed to make my TR1MP rather flaky (bluescreens, unusual errors) and worryingly reported my transmit rate as 24mbit no matter how close/good my signal to my home 802.11G router was. Hopefully this one will improve matters somewhat!
Having just installed it it seems better already. One thing i have noticed is that the driver version reported in device manager is 2.4.1.30 and dated 17/07/2003 still, while the client utility tells me it is 3.1.1.48 and dated 1st of April 2004.
OK, im trying these generic fujitsu drivers, after forcing them on there. However, as soon as I switch on the wireless interface, I receive a driver install wizard for UGX???
Is this something all TR’s need to install, or is this another japanese import qwerk?
No, it sounds like it’s not working. That’s puzzling. I could have sworn that the TRx/B had an Atheros chipset. They’re the only one shipping a/b/g chipsets. If you could find out exactly what chipset your system has then you can find the right driver. Of course, you can open it up if you really want to know for sure.
After a lengthy 45min call to sony vaio support UK yesterday, I’m pretty darn p*ssed off at sony right now… I’ve spent thousands with the company, and they point blanky refuse to give any support whatsoever. I was asking for everything from a copy of the recovery cd, to just a phone number to ring. I ended up speaking with a team leader for most of it, although polite, he was no use at all. They wouldnt even send an internal email on by behalf to find out where to ring in japan if it came to that.
I did however learn that that call centre has a 2nd line support department based in Brussels, for any tech questions they cant answer themselves. Does anyone know of any contact info for this place?
They were so stubborn, I they refused to even give me an address to write to, I am L I V I D W I T H S O N Y
So if anyone has any further suggestions I might try, or even better someone with a TR with a/b/g wireless.. PLEASE HELP!!
I’m sorry you’ve had problems but you really can’t blame your local Sony Support when you bought an import unit. Even though it’s all Sony…each country’s Sony company is a separate entity from the others. So, it’s not like they were hiding anything from you. You were asking for support on an item that doesn’t have warranty or support in your country. This is something that people have to be aware of when they buy imports. This is the case with almost every company that I know of.
That said, I do hope someone here who has the same unit as you can help you out. You may also want to contact other importers (Dynamism, iCube, Kemplar) and ask them if they can be kind enough to provide you with the drivers. Most of these companies have figured out how to configure the systems using English so it’s worth a try.
McGreggor - I understand your frustration, but its the same with most companies. They frown upon imports and clearly state your warranty and tech support will not be valid outside the country…
Generally you would need to deal with your importer who will help you with support…how did you import the TR?
This is my worst fear which is why, no matter how much I want an import, I won’t pick up one.
Oh, you know what…that first message for the driver that it wants could be for the Bluetooth. It may be trying to install the Bluetooth driver first (hinted by the UGX) and that’s why the Wi-Fi drivers aren’t working.
Do you have the Bluetooth driver available? If you do, try installing that one first.
You may want to skip the wizard and do the whole process manually.
You can go into the Component Manager and manually install the wi-fi drivers for the networking device.
Regardless of whether its the same with other companies or not, GLOBAL organisations like Sony should damn well give me support no matter where I am. They are not living in the real world by saying you must go back to the country of origin to get support. I have paid fair and square, the money is in Sony’s pocket, and they ARE perfectly able to give me what I need, they just choose not to.
It seems funny to me how a laptop that is supposed to be only sold in Japan, to the Japanese market, comes with keyboard with the english alphabet on it.
As for other Global organisations, like car companies, there are laws now that force them into giving service to imported cars. No longer can they refuse to service a car etc, just because it came from another country.
If people kick up enough fuss about the service and support (or lack of)
by sony, perhaps the law may be changed to include consumer products like laptops.
My brother runs the britishinformation.com portal, has half a million users per month, I’m gonna stark kicking off against Sony on there. Im sure they’ll start to listen eventually…..
